POLL: Brainstorming a bit to determine how to step up the anti-demagogue campaign a bit

Let's have a bit of a brainstorming session on the blog today ;)

I have posted a poll on the left-hand side of the page.  Please participate and then leave a comment below and tell me what you think we should do next. Obviously, Facebook fan pages and blogs are fun, but we have a lot of voices that can do some serious damage to the wingnuts if we unite behind a common goal.

What that goal is...I haven't figured it out yet.  Candidates, issues, calling the wackos on their BS? You tell me.

  1. I remember when OUT magazine actually would "out" people who were taking a right-wing stance and were secretly gay. I'm not saying it's the thing to do, but I think it's a necessary evil to combat the voices of anti-gay hatred out there.

  2. In the early days of our country people like this man would have been locked up in an asylum for very good reason.

  3. Bottom line, boycotts are the way to go to initially call attention to the cause; network affiliate stations that carry the programming should start feeling the pain....sponsors of the respective shows should start feeling some pain as well....STOP GIVING THESE IDIOTS MAINSTREAM MEDIA COVERAGE! Stop giving them a platform to appear like they're relevant...let them preach to their own misguided, hateful flocks.

  4. I sent my money to a reputable charity for Haitian relief. It's going to go on a long time and they need it worse that I do.

  5. First, let's agree on whom to target: make a list of the top ten demagogues, then, find common denominators such as media network affiliations, political action groups, congressional or senatorial supporters, lobbyists, etc. Target those common denominators.

  6. I think gay lawyers and lobbiest should work together to get legislation passed to tax churches and tv evangelists and to pass the hate-crimes bill in Congress.

  7. Wouldn't it be easier to do fundraising for an existing group that already fights the Pat Robertsons of the world, and help that group increase its media presence? For example, Americans United for Separation of Church and State. AU could benefit so much from a fundraising campaign aimed at AU's outreach and advertising efforts. Making a new group would eat up a lot of dollars in overhead.

  8. I would not donate to an organization created to combat the likes of PR, I think donations are better spent to help those he puts down. I hope everyone on here donated at least $10 to the red cross for Haiti.

  9. I have donated $10 and plan to donate $100 more when I get my tax return on Friday. I donated by texting Haiti to the American Red Cross (90999) on my cell phone.

I think all Christians who tithe should drop a note in the bucket/basket/plate saying "I sent my tithes to the Haiti Relief Fund" and sign it. If you get frowned at for this then I suggest you find another church immediately!

  10. Boycott their sponsors (and let their sponsors know about it), but also, ring in to their shows, http://www.freewayblogger.com/funwithhateradio.htm explains why and how to do it right.

  11. I wish some billionaire would step up to sponsor pro-liberal TV ads just like the d**khead that is sponsoring the pro-life Tebow Superbowl ad. How come all the billionaires are right wing? Oh, that's right....they became billionaires by being greedy and self-serving.

  12. Has anyone considered boycotting the stations that air The 700 Club? In my neck of the woods it's broadcasted on the "Family" channel. I think a signed petition sent to the networks with a pledge boycotting their station would be the best first step. Money helps but many people are lacking in that department right now. Awareness is key and an ideal first step.

  13. So here's a brainstorm for ya.

People can be classified into three categories.

    1. I love Pat Robertson, praise the Lord!
    2. I could give a crap less about Pat Robertson.
    3. Pat Robertson is a bad, bad man.

It's my bet that he's gotten rich off of #1, so that he can convert #2's into #1's. He's not getting the #3's. The #3's & #2's have already made their decision, or chosen to ignore him. We're not getting the #1's.

No-win situ, if you ask me.

So. We have to classify our intent here. Is it:

    1. Getting the word out about how bad of a man Pat Robertson is.
    2. Fueling his fire by making sure he understands that multiple millions of people hate his guts.
    3. Eliminating his ability to communicate his thoughts and desires with the world.

I'm not sure which one we're after here. I can't see that #1 or #2 would be productive:

#1: You've either made your decision, or you ignore him on his face.
#2: Really want to hear more from this guy, do we?
You can pay for #3 to happen, but it's against the law. :)

So yeah. Can someone post like a mission statement, or something that people can actually get behind and become an activist with?

    Thanks! :)

  14. Fundamentalism is an extreme. Extremes in cases throughout human history have been posited by many others to not be healthy (Aristotle to Ben Franklin and beyond), but have also been tempered by the other majority, which is not extreme.
Success in moderation can lead to more easily sustainable development. An extremist response to an extremist is only adding fuel to an undesirable fire. Activism has its place, though, as people like Robertson, due to our natchy Constitution, are given the right to speak freely about whatever crazy thing they want; just like this posting.
That same right of free speech, choice of religion, and the equal pursuit of happiness should also convey to homosexuals, people of any "race" or ethnicity, and people of all religions (yes, even the ones we may be annoyed by). Robertson, as a paragon of American and Christian values is a joke, and in and of himself is not worth the time or effort to organize a protest.
Robertson is included in protection under the Constitution and, as undesirable as he is to many of us, we are allowed by our set of laws to live in a relatively free society. Understanding, however, that Robertson's fundamentalist Christian attitudes threaten our fundamentally American way of life, he becomes a hard pill to swallow for many and a threat to the traditional American way, if only by his surprising fellowship.
This is a very difficult issue to reconcile, as many people truly dislike what he stands for, what he says, and what he does; Christians, atheists, Muslims, straight, gay, male, female. Any of us who would stand up for our Constitutional rights as American citizens should feel the threat of what Robertson is putting out there, but we should keep a more watchful eye on the people listening to him...they are the ones with the votes which form and influence the laws of this country. We each have a vote and a mouth (or hands, keyboards, or music) to give voice to our opinions.
We are free to hate Robertson, too, regardless of which minority group any of us may belong to; with equal or greater fury; to whatever end each of us wishes to take that hate, so long as it does not impinge upon his or his followers' rights.

You will catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.

  15. You people are a real peace of work.. plotting to overthrow Pat Robertson, who is not a government official, a lawmaker, nor the president of the United States. You seem more concern about this guy and what he says, than this empty suite president in the white house, along with congress, who is determined to rewrite the Constitution, apologize to dictators, control large corporations, boast about how much he is doing for us, and tell us we are too stupid to know what's good for us, and he's going to spend trillions more of our tax dollars, print up some more money, beef up the unions, and jam Obama Care down our throats, even though most Americans don't want it! Hey gang, get your priorities straight here! Roberts can't screw up the country, but this socialist bunch of dim wits in our government that are in charge, certainly CAN.. and will, if they have their way!!!

  17. I think there's a thin line between free speech and hate speech and pat robertson crossed that line.

  18. We as Americans must combat Evil at all Levels within our Society; and Purge those "Right Wing" Crack Pots into silence! They are a disgrace to our Republican/Democracy of Government and deem their own set agenda by mis interpreting Biblical Principles. They will see Judgment Day as known to be the Sons and Daughters’ of Perdition! They will never see the light of God Almighty and will be judged for their hatred and foolish actions! The Penalty of such Hate and Lies is Spiritual Death. Amen! Sky Pilot Evangelism of Evil will end in Evil! Amen!

  19. Tell your television provider (cable/satellite) that you don’t want CBN as part of your service. Part of your monthly payment, pays for the network CBN and therefore Pat Robertson. Encourage everyone to block CBN from their menu. Blocking a channel can be done at home by using the remote. A hundred thousand people telling their cable/satellite companies that they don’t want CBN could get CBN dropped. And hurt Pat Robertson in the wallet

  20. You don't have to do anything....Pat Robertson does it for you. Give Pat the opportunity to make an ass of hmself and his theology and Pat DELIVERS! . He's the solution, not the problem

  21. Pat Robertson is a self-serving ASS..My mother was a HUGE PR fan and on that subject we TOTALLY disagreed...and as soon as I heard about blocking CBN, I ran straight for the remote...the 7th level of hell is reserved for PR and those of his ilk..false prophets who are getting rich because people who don't have money to spare are lining his pockets...If he gave a damn about anything but himself he would sell all his fancy cars, numerous mansions, and share the wealth......thank you I feel much better now

  22. If this man spent half as much time HELPING people instead of cutting them down and thinking he is so much better than everyone else, just imagine all the good he could do. It really concerns me when good honest folks take the word of the man as the gospel truth. Wake up America! your common sense is calling you!

  23. Many good suggestions, not the least of which was Tom's somewhat misguided diarhea of the mouth call to attention. Consider: Big business can now fund campaigns like it couldn't do in decades. STFU could just as easily be interpolated WTFU -the "w" is for wake. I wouldn't want it to be my wake because I watched the founding father's good sense die from our country for an unexpected evil they couldn't have anticipated. I'm choosing to WTFU. Join me.

  26. Seems to me the best thing we could do to dispose of evil such as this is expose it in even greater detail to mainstream coverage. I know many would disagree with me on this, saying we should ignore him and not give him any more press than he already gets. But I believe that is our error with evil men such as this already made far too often.
As with Hitler, we ignored his rantings and ideas. We called him a delusional nut and just ignored him for years as he wrote "Mein Kampf" and rose to power. See where that got us... Isolationism is not the answer. It only presses good men to do bad things and bad men to do even worse. Throughout human history, that which is done in secret holds great power over the fearful, and people are very afraid these days, content to hide behind internet personas and the like. As it is, only a select few see his face, hear his madness, and they are generally the ones who want to hear it, who already believe in his cause as righteous. If we somehow press his lunacy further into the public eye, mainstream fans of media, and let them see the evil for themselves, I think it would be far more detrimental than ignoring him and hoping he fades away.
Just imagine, for a moment, his opinions on Black Americans, Gay Americans, hell, anything that seems to pour out of his mouth, being shown to the average school mum before taking her little ones out to play.
